The First Five Quests

These are the first five Quests of the Pembrokeshire Wizard. We intend to add to these over the course of time, building up into a collection of quests throughout the shire.

QUEST ONE - The Saintly Peninsular St Davids

quest 1Distance: 3.5 mls/5.6 km

Estimated time excluding stops: 2 hours

The Saint Davids Peninsular is a very beautiful and mystical part of the shire that many early Celtic saints came to. The quest takes you on a section of the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast Path. One of your tasks is to find a secret sign on the way. You will also pass the birthplace of St David; then through the picturesque Porth Clais Harbour where King Arthur landed in pursuit of a terrifying wild boar called Twrch Trywyth.

QUEST TWO - Garn Fawr Fortress, Strumble Head

quest 2Distance: 1.2 mls/1.8 km

Estimated time excluding stops: 1 hour

The Celtic fortress of Garn Fawr is situated on the dramatic Strumble Head. This is a short but magnificent walk which is not suitable for buggies, as there are some short, steep, rocky sections. Listen to Pwyll telling you a story about a battle of Wizardry, answer the riddle and find some kind of special rose on its summit.

On clear days you can sometimes see as far as Ireland.

QUEST THREE - Pentre Ifan near Newport

quest 3Distance: 2.82 mls/4.55 km

Estimated time excluding stops: 2.5 Hours

This is a walk through some enchanting woodland, visiting the Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber. Pentre Ifan is the most famous and spectacular of all of Pembrokeshire's Pre-historic sites. Learn about the ancient druids who used to frequent the woods. There are also stories told here about fairies being seen dancing in the woods.

Listen to Iolair tell you about the beauty and importance of trees. Hear the riddle and try to answer it.

QUEST FOUR - Carew Castle, Carew

quest 4Distance: 0.9 mls/1.5 km

Estimated time including visiting the castle: 2.5 Hours

Note: This quest involves paying an entrance fee to Carew Castle; in 2005 this was £3 per adult and £8 for a family ticket.

Travel back to the days of a beautiful Princess, Knights in shining armour and a grand Medieval Tournament.

Visit this magical castle and learn about its ghosts and history. There are two riddles on this quest - can you answer them?

QUEST FIVE - Skomer Island

quest 5Distance: 3.6mls/5.9 km

Estimated time excluding stops: 2.5 hours

Note: This quest involves taking a 15 minute boat ride from

Martin’s Haven to Skomer. In May 2006 prices were £14 per adult including a landing fee and £5 each for children under 16.

Weather permitting boats sail most days from April to October. Boats to the island usually leave at 10.00, 11.00, and noon, returning at 15.00, 15.30 and 16.00.

Skomer is surrounded by the sea and in the winter is exposed to the full force of Atlantic storms. However, in summer it usually has a kind and sunny climate. Skomer is a real treasure island of wildlife and is a designated area of Special Protection and a National Nature Reserve.
